What is Biology?: Definition, History and Importance

The study of life on Earth, implies having a complex field that constitutes everything that has life, every process, phenomenon or state of what surrounds us. Biology is characterized by being a science, which is in charge of establishing an adequate structure for each of these elements.

In this post, we will deal with essential aspects about this science, so you can understand everything about it.

What is Biology?

Biology is considered a science. It is identified by the study of life and the constitution of living beings. Also, it implements the scientific method to explain each phenomenon or biological fact that occurs on planet Earth.

The word Biology, comes from the Greek «bios», which means «life» and «lodge», which refers to science or treatise. That is why, Biology is defined as:

The science that deals with the study of life and all that constitutes it.

Study of Biology

Biology is a science that studies life as that state that contains energy, through all living beings and their interaction with the environment. It can be said then, that this science studies the origin, function, structure and evolution of everything that has life.

As far as modern biology is concerned, it is a science made up of sub-disciplines. Despite the fact that it covers a wide field of study, there are elements that allow us to unite this science with each one of the disciplines.

On the other hand, one of the areas that this science pays attention to is the cell. This basic unit that conforms living beings is defined as one of the primordial units for heredity. It is the basis for the creation of new species on Earth.

The cell is very important in the creation of living beings.

In addition to this, Biology is in charge of establishing the bases that regulate each of the processes of living beings. In this respect, we can mention the constitution of the species and how they are ordered according to their characteristics.

This science, presents the following classification of the species, in this way we can differentiate them:

  • Animal kingdom: It includes living beings considered heterotrophic. They are those that possess energy through respiration.
  • Kingdom of the mushrooms: They are those species, which have immobile condition and are heterotrophic. They are in charge of the use of the organic matter they have at their disposal for their feeding process.
  • Vegetable kingdom: In this group, there are living beings that are autotrophic and do not have movement. They use solar energy for the elaboration of their food.
  • Protista kingdom: It is characterized by those microscopic beings.
  • Kingdom of the Arches: They are those unicellular beings __ possessing only one cell__.
  • Bacterial kingdom: They are unicellular organisms. Some are prokaryotes. This group is considered as those species that are found in great quantities on Earth.

History of Biology

Knowing the constitution of each organism on planet Earth was one of the reasons that led man to become interested in the origin and characteristics of each one of them.

Naturalism, is a field of study carried out since ancient times of Greece and Egypt. The term of Biology, began to be used in the 19th century, as a consequence of the scientific advances and the Age of Reason. Where everything was looked for an explanation, that could be demonstrated experimentally.

In this sense, Karl Friedrich Burdach was considered the main actor in this field. It is decided then that, that Biology is characterized by an independent study, separated from philosophy.

Later, with the studies made by Darwin and Gregor Mendel __ discovery of evolution and genetics, at the end of the XIX century and beginning of the XX century, allowed that Biology will be considered as the science that we know today.

Biology as a Science

Over the years, biology has evolved. Through the discoveries that were developed thanks to scientists, this science has managed to transcend in the study of living beings.

Because, Biology is the key base to understand the functioning and development of each one of the living beings. Without this science, it would not have been possible to understand the process of life on Earth. It is thanks to its scientific method, which allows establishing the aspects of study and demonstration of many of the phenomena that characterize living beings.

In addition to this, Biology as a science has allowed the establishment of branches and/or auxiliary disciplines, which classify the diverse areas of study, that part of this science. For example: botany, zoology, histology, anatomy, among others.

Biology in Everyday Life and its Importance

Biology is considered the door to discover those mysteries that are hidden on planet Earth, in relation to life. By means of this science, is that today, we can understand in the case of the microorganisms that have complex structures and that the human being, is considered an incredible machine.

On the other hand, this science has been in charge of significantly improving health, both for human beings and animals. Through Biology, it has been possible to create medicines for the treatment of many of the existing diseases on Earth.

In addition, Molecular Biology has been able to improve plant species. This, by means of genetic procedures that allow to obtain the increase of the nutritious content of the same one. Thus, it has been possible to generate a resistance in them, for the seasons of drought and the diseases.

There are many reasons to establish the importance of biology. This, because this science has contributed significantly to the understanding of life, the facts that occur around us and the changes or modifications that have the various species over time.

Therefore, studying this science allows you to expand your knowledge about the formation of life on the planet, its development, the interaction of beings with the environment, among others.
